They took the most recent meeting 2-1 back in 2023, and their defensive structure makes them tough to break down. But the strongest play on the board is the Under. Best Bet: Morocco vs Brazil Under 2.5 Goals This has all the ingredients of a 1-0, 0-0, or 1-1 type of result — low event, high tension, and plenty of respect between the sides. While the Sparks have looked like the stronger team overall and already picked up a head-to-head win over Phoenix, I’m seeing some clear edges that make the home dog the play here. Phoenix has been road warriors lately — 7 of their last 8 games have come away from home. They’re finally starting a 3-game homestand, which should provide a much-needed reset in familiar surroundings with better rest and crowd support. That travel grind has to be wearing on them, and getting back inside Footprint Center is a breath of fresh air. On the other side, the Sparks recent hot streak came against some of the weaker teams in the league. They’ve also been catching some favorable matchups while Phoenix has been grinding through a tough slate that included multiple battles against the powerhouse Minnesota Lynx. I expect the Mercury to regress positively to their true level in this spot. Add in that Phoenix has been the sharper team against the spread recently, and the Sparks are getting a bit overvalued by the market here. We’re backing the home dog. Take Mercury +1.5

Game Analysis

The Netherlands biggest edge in this matchup might actually be their defense rather than their attack. They're extremely difficult to break down, and that structure should set the tone early.
While the market has installed the Dutch as slight favorites, this feels much closer to a true coin-flip than most opening World Cup matches. Japan brings serious defensive discipline and organization that will keep them right in it throughout. The Dutch have the higher-end talent and superior finishing quality, but both sides are fundamentally sound at the back.
Opening World Cup games are notoriously cagey, and with two defensively-minded teams on display, we're likely looking at a tactical, low-event battle with limited clear-cut chances.
Best Bet: Japan/Netherlands Under 2.5 Goals
This is a spot where the value lies on the side of caution. Expect a chess match more than a track meet.
