No one seems to believe the Phoenix Suns can keep up their surprising start except the Suns themselves, who look to move a season-high nine games above .500 when they take on the Grizzlies on Friday in Memphis. The Suns, who have alternated wins and losses in their first four games of the New Year after closing 2013 by winning 10 of 12, remain in seventh place in the Western Conference. Memphis has struggled to keep pace in the Western Conference without defensive stalwart Marc Gasol (knee) in the middle. Back the Suns as a road underdog.

The Warriors spread Denver out and went crazy from 3-point range behind Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson last spring, and the Nuggets lost their best perimeter defender - Andre Iguodala - to Golden State over the summer. The Memphis Grizzlies needed to go out on the road to end their losing streak and hope some of that momentum can carry over to their own building. The Grizzlies attempt to snap a three-game home losing streak when they host the Utah Jazz on Monday. The Jazz, who own the worst record in the Western Conference, would seem like the perfect team to pick on, but Utah has been surprisingly frisky on its road trip. The Jazz can clinch a winning record on their five-game trip by toppling Memphis after evening up their mark at 2-2 with an 88-85 triumph at Charlotte on Saturday. I like the points with the Jazz.

This has been an incredibly streaky month for the Pistons, who ended November with two straight losses before winning their first four games in December. They followed up that winning streak

After finally getting their first-round pick on the court, the Washington Wizards are looking to get back to .500. Washington, which had won seven of nine following a sluggish start to the season, will try to get back on track Monday in a home matchup against the Denver Nuggets. The Wizards opened with seven losses in their first nine games before an exact reversal of that stretch evened their record after last Monday's 98-80 win over Orlando. Washington (9-10) slipped in its previous contest, losing 109-105 in overtime on Friday against Eastern Conference-worst Milwaukee. The setback did have its bright spot, however, with Otto Porter Jr. making his Wizards debut after being selected third overall in June. Porter, who missed the first 18 games because of a hip injury, played 14 minutes but missed all three of his field goal attempts. He went scoreless with two rebounds and an assist as he eases back into playing time. Washington swept the two-game series between the teams last season after dropping nine of the previous ten meetings. Ty Lawson is very doubtful for the Nuggets. Take the Wizards here at home.

The Clippers turned it around the next night with a 101-81 victory in Memphis - the lone West opponent on their trip. What followed was a testy 88-82 loss against Cleveland on Saturday night in which Los Angeles shot a horrendous 32.2 percent and failed to score at least 90 points for the first time this season. Look for the Clippers to easily score over 100 points tonight here in Philly as the 76ers have allowed 105 points or more in 12 of their last 13 games. the Clippers are also one of the leagues weakest defenses giving up 102 points per game this season. This one goes over the posted total.

After taking two games to get back into playing shape, Eric Bledsoe will return to the starting lineup Tuesday as the Phoenix Suns visit the Memphis Grizzlies. Bledsoe, who missed six games with a shin contusion, averaged 16 points over 28 minutes as the Suns settled for a home-and-home split with the Utah Jazz. The Grizzlies have dropped three of four, the latest a 97-88 defeat at the hands of the struggling and shorthanded Brooklyn Nets on Saturday. Bledsoe's return to the starting five should immediately make the Suns a better team. Memphis will be without Marc Gasol (knee), and might also be missing Zach Randolph (ingrown toenail). Randolph wasn't at practice Monday and didn't sound overly optimistic about his chances of returning after a one-game absence. I like the Suns in a rare road spot.

Both the Lakers and the Grizzlies will be hoping to avoid a losing streak when they meet in Los Angeles on Friday. The Lakers looked as though they had found a formula with Jordan Hill in the starting lineup alongside Pau Gasol, but the defense let them down in a loss Denver on Wednesday. Memphis had been trading off wins and losses until finally suffering back-to-back setbacks against the Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors. The Lakers Hill collected 21 points and 11 rebounds in his first start and followed it up with an 18-point, 15-rebound effort at Denver and seems to have brought something more out of Gasol, who pulled out of a rough stretch with 39 points and 20 boards in the last two games. Memphis has lost 7 of 8 spread decisions and ranks 23rd in offensive efficiency and 26th in defensive efficiency. Back the Lakers at home plus the points.

Forward Kevin Love, who ranked second in the NBA, averaging 26.4 points, couldn't get a last second tip-in to fall and Minnesota saw its modest two-game win streak snapped. Andrew Bynum, who has missed two games this season while dealing with a knee injury, played a season-high 21 minutes against Chicago, scoring 11 points and grabbing six rebounds in his first start. The Cavaliers handed Minnesota its first loss of the season last week, riding 19 points from CJ Miles to a 93-92 win that nearly slipped away as Love's last-second 3-point attempt wouldn't go. This one also stays close so take the points.

Rudy Gay makes his return to Memphis for the first time as a visiting player when the Toronto Raptors take on the host Grizzlies on Wednesday. Gay played six-plus seasons for the Grizzlies before being traded to Toronto last season. Memphis has been the model of inconsistency, alternating wins and losses in its first seven contests, and is coming off a 95-79 thumping at Indiana on Monday. The Raptors have lost four of their last five, including a 110-104 double-overtime defeat at Houston on Monday. The Raptors have been terrific on the boards, leading the NBA in offensive rebounds (14.9) and second-chance points (21.3). Memphis rode a dominant defense to the Western Conference finals a year ago but has not been nearly as stingy this year, allowing 98.9 points per game on 46.6 percent shooting. The offensive production hasn't been terribly impressive, either, as the Grizzlies rank in the bottom third of the league in scoring. Seven of Toronto's eight games have been decided by nine points or fewer and I see this one staying close.

The two teams expected to pose the biggest challenge to the defending-champion Miami Heat will do battle Saturday night in Brooklyn when the Nets entertain the unbeaten Indiana Pacers. Brooklyn is off to a slow start to the season - falling below .500 with a 112-108 overtime loss to Washington on Friday - but is unbeaten at home. That peerless mark will be put to the test against a powerhouse Pacers team off to its best start since the 1970-71 ABA campaign. It isn't simply that the Pacers have won every game they've played - they have dominated along the way. Indiana has defeated opponents by an average of 10.3 points per game - and that mark was even higher before Toronto posed a legitimate challenge Friday night on the way to a 91-84 Pacers triumph. That gives them a nice head start on the inconsistent Nets, who are having trouble generating offense and even more of a problem rebounding. Too many edges here for the Pacers and they get the road win.

The Nets own victories over two-time defending champion Miami and Utah at home, but have dropped both of their road tests. John Wall led the way for the Wizards, scoring 24 points and making a career-best five from beyond the 3-point arc. The new-look Brooklyn Nets begin the season with a trip to face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. The Nets overhauled their roster after losing to Chicago in the first round of the playoffs, trading for veterans Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry from Boston to join a core led by point guard Deron Williams. Mike Brown returns to the Cavaliers in hopes of recapturing the success he enjoyed in his first stint, when he led the team to the two best seasons in franchise history. First-year Brooklyn Coach Jason Kidd will not be on the bench for the first two games, serving a suspension for a drunk driving arrest. With all of the new pieces on the Nets I

The San Antonio Spurs are one win away from their fifth NBA title and the Miami Heat need a series-saving victory when Game 6 of the NBA Finals is played Tuesday. San Antonio took a 3-2 lead with a 114-104 victory Sunday behind a season-best game from Manu Ginobili and another superb performance from 3-point shooter Danny Green. Miami won 27 consecutive games during the regular season, but is finding the playoffs to be much tougher, having gone 5-6 in its last 11 games. This will be a tough physical game and I believe unlike the first five games tonight will come down to late in the fourth quarter. I can see the Spurs winning this game outright but I also can see Miami getting a late win. My play is the Spurs plus the seven.

The San Antonio Spurs delivered an attention-getting salvo in the opener and look to take a 2-0 lead when the NBA Finals resume in Miami on Sunday. Tony Parker supplied the dagger with a circus shot that narrowly beat the shot clock with 5.2 seconds left and 37-year-old Tim Duncan turned back the clock with 20 points and 14 rebounds in the 92-88 victory. LeBron James had a triple-double for the Heat but his 18 points were his fewest of the postseason. Miami has scored fewer than 25 fourth-quarter points in each of its last seven postseason games. San Antonio had just four turnovers in Game 1 to match the NBA Finals record set by Detroit in 2005. The Spurs are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games. My feeling is getting the Spurs plus this number is still showing true value. While Miami may win I don

The San Antonio Spurs are well-rested and the Miami Heat are still in basketball-playing rhythm as the NBA Finals begin Thursday in South Beach. San Antonio is 12-2 in the postseason and completed a four-game sweep of the Memphis Grizzlies in the West on May 27. Miami prevailed in a grueling seven-game series in the East finals against Indiana that ended on Monday. The tandem of Parker and Duncan will determine whether San Antonio prevails. Parker had one of the top seasons of any point guard in the NBA and the 37-year-old Duncan has experienced a terrific campaign for someone of his age. Parker is averaging 23 points and 7.2 rebounds in the postseason while Duncan is chipping in 17.8 points and 9.2 rebounds. Another key figure will be second-year forward Kawhi Leonard, who draws the task of guarding James. Ginobili is still capable of hitting the clutch shots despite his diminishing skills and the solid supporting cast includes Green, center Tiago Splitter and 3-point threat Matt Bonner. The Spurs are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Heat are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win.

LeBron James has been his usual dominant self at times in the series but has gotten little help from his supporting cast. Indiana has controlled the inside in its three wins and will attempt to do so again. Miami won Game 5 by evening things up on the interior but fell off the pace again in Game 6, when the Pacers opened up a 53-33 advantage on the glass and a 44-22 edge in points in the paint. Some of that falls on Chris Bosh, who is 5-for-21 with 12 rebounds in the last three games combined and has yet to grab more than five boards in a game during the series. Indiana is the only team to hold the Heat below 80 points this season and it has done it twice, including limiting Miami to a season-low 36.1 percent shooting in Saturday

Pacers + 3 Indiana counts on its size advantage on the frontline to lead the way, as it has in each of its two victories in the series. While George, Roy Hibbert and David West combined for 66 points, the rest of the lineup managed just 13 in the 90-79 setback in game five. The starting backcourt of George Hill and Lance Stephenson was especially disappointing with a total of five points. I expect both to play much better tonight at home. The Heat are 0-4 ATS in their last four games following a win. The Pacers are 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a loss. The Pacers pull this one out and this series goes to game seven on Monday.

The Indiana Pacers made the necessary adjustments on the interior to keep LeBron James out of the paint and ended up evening the Eastern Conference finals at two games apiece. After getting torched in the post by James and letting role players like Udonis Haslem and Chris Andersen beat them in Game 3, the Pacers tightened things in Game 4. Roy Hibbert and David West were quick to help on James, who did not get a chance to settle into the paint and ended up fouling out with under a minute left on Tuesday. Indiana was outscored in the paint in Game 3 but built up a 50-32 advantage in that area in Game 4 while outrebounding the Heat 49-30. They also had the edge in games one and two in that area. Hibbert has recorded at least 20 points and 10 rebounds five times in the playoffs. He reached those marks seven times total in the regular season. The Pacers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Heat are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games. I see this one being close so I

For all the love that Paul George has gotten during the postseason, it is becoming apparent that George Hill might actually be the most important player for the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers hope to have their point guard back when they host the New York Knicks in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Saturday. Hill sat out Game 5 with a concussion and Indiana's offense noticeably suffered without its director. Hill spent Game 5 in a darkened training room after taking an elbow from Knicks center Tyson Chandler in the previous game. He will need to pass the NBA

San Antonio used a 15-0 run in the first quarter of Game 5 to seize control and did not trail the rest of the way. After shooting poorly in the fourth quarter and overtime during the Game 4 loss, the Spurs hit 51.9 percent from the field back at home for Game 5. Golden State got this far with a lot of energy and some incredible shooting performances from Curry and Klay Thompson. The Warriors did not have either one of those things in San Antonio on Tuesday but I expect them to get it back tonight here at home. The Warriors pulled off an overtime home win in Game 4 and have gone 4-1 in their own arena this postseason, with the lone setback coming to the Spurs in Game 3, 102-92. The Spurs are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The Underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings. Take the Warriors to even up the series and go back to San Antonio for game seven.
